Various radioactive wastes have been generated from Chemical Processing Facility for basic research on advanced reactor fuel reprocessing, radioactive waste disposal, and nuclear fuel cycle technology. Many types of reagents have been used for the experiments, and some troublesome materials were produced in the course of experiments. The radioactive liquid wastes were treated for stable and safe storage using decomposition, solvent extraction, precipitation, and solidification methods. In this study, current status of harmless treatment for the radioactive liquid wastes would be reported.

We developed a hybrid MA(III) recovery process combining MA(III)+Ln(III) co-recovery flowsheet by solvent extraction with TBP and MA(III)/Ln(III) separation flowsheet by simulated moving bed chromatography using HONTA impregnated adsorbents with large particle size porous silica support.

TRUEX, the 4 group separation and EXAm were developed for partitioning of minor actinides from high level liquid waste from reprocessing process, and demonstrated by the continuous extraction test using genuine high level liquid waste. Although the extractants for the processes have excellent performance for recovery of MA, the molecules contain phosphorus which could be cause for the secondary waste from the solvent extraction processes. And the processes use hydrophilic complexant in aqueous phase for MA separation from rare earth elements. To minimize the radioactive waste, we have been developing the extractants in accord with CHON principle, and proposed a hydrometallurgical process called SELECT aiming at separating actinides for transmutation. The separation performances of the flowsheets were evaluated by continuous extraction tests using simulated and genuine high level liquid waste. The details of the research activities will be presented in this conference.
